Old Town Music Hall Projects Music and Memories

Posted: Updated:

The Old Town Music Hall is a fixture in El Segundo, but it's surprising how few people know about it.  Proprietor Bill Field bought the place back in the  1960's and he's been  running it ever since, alone since his partner Bill Coffman passed away in 2001.  His weekly devotion: playing old movies that range from silent films to classics  from the 30's and 40's and  accompanying the silents on the Mighty Wurlitzer organ,  a spectacular instrument that draws gasps as the curtain opens to reveal an entire wall full of drums and xylophone and marimbas and pipes. It is one of the few of its kind left in the world.

Every weekend, fans gather to listen to the organ, sing along with the old-time songs and enjoy a taste of a time when a night out was a community affair.  It's a step back in time that either awakens old memories, or creates new ones for those who have never experienced such a thing before.

The theater at   140 Richmond Street in El Segundo also hosts concerts and special events.  It is kept afloat by tax-deductible donations.

I had the chance to demo Samsung's Gear VR recently. It's a virtual reality headset powered by a smartphone. Don't let that fool you though. It's impressive!
