Thousands of Dolphins Stampede Southern California Coast

Posted: Updated:

We've seen some beautiful video of dolphins, but this video is pretty jaw-dropping.

Southern California has more dolphins than anywhere on earth. We've got Long-beaked Common Dolphins, Short-beaked Common Dolphins, Bottlenose Dolphins, Risso's Dolphin, and Pacific White-sided Dolphins. Southern California has some of the largest dolphin pods or herds in the world.

This new video was shot and edited by Captain Dave Anderson of Capt. Dave's Dolphin and Whale Safari. He used a drone – an untethered aerial camera – to get above a huge mega-pod of thousands of common dolphins stampeding Dana Point. You can see thousands of dolphins playing in the water as they migrate, with three gray whales, down the coast toward San Clemente. And as an extra bonus, the footage shows a newborn Humpback whale calf snuggling and playing with its mom as an escort whale stands guard nearby. This last bit was shot recently in Maui.

Captain Dave has been doing this a long time, but feels this drone technology opens a lot of new doors. He shot the video while riding in a small inflatable boat, launching and catching the camera on his own. Check out the shot of him at the end to get an idea of the size of the camera. Captain Dave says he's "learned so much about these whales and dolphins from this drone footage that it feels like I have entered a new dimension. Drones are going to change how we view the animal world." He sums up the experience with one word: "Wow".
