ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. (KMSP) -

A St. Louis Park Middle School student was taken to the hospital Thursday following a near-drowning incident in the school's pool.

District officials said a physical education teacher noticed the 7th grader in distress at the end of a swim class around 9 a.m. Thursday. The teacher pulled the student from the water and performed CPR until paramedics arrived and took the 12-year-old to a hospital in St. Louis Park.

The student was later transferred to Gillette Children's Hospital in St. Paul. His identity and condition have not been released.

School officials canceled all afterschool activities and postponed parent-teacher conferences that were scheduled for Thursday night.

A total of 28 students were in the swim class.
