Restaurants add Obamacare surcharge

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - A Florida restaurant chain is adding a surcharge to bills to help cover employee health insurance required under the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare.

Gator's Dockside is adding a 1% Affordable Care Act surcharge on bills at several of its locations.

The added charge is broken out from sales taxes.

The company said it implemented the surcharge because of the compliance costs surrounding the law.

It posted a notice in several locations saying that: "The costs associated with ACA compliance could ultimately close our doors".

Currently only management receives health benefits, but the restaurant will have to offer coverage to all workers who put in at least 30 hours a week.

The company employs about 500 people.

In addition to supporting the Special Olympics with an annual golf tournament, Gator’s Dockside restaurant say they are a community partner and active in local fundraising programs with charities, schools, youth sports and more.

The company's Facebook page only had a few netagive comments about the surcharge as of Thursday morning.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
