Spike Lee slams 'hipsters' for Brooklyn gentrification

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Movie director Spike Lee had a lot to say about the gentrification of his home borough of Brooklyn and he's blaming 'hipsters' for changing the neighborhoods.

Lee, who was addressing an audience at Pratt Institute during a Black History Month event on Tuesday night, became irate when an audience member said there were benefits to gentrification.

“They just move in the neighborhood... You’ve got to have some respect you just can’t come in to where people have a culture... and you come in and knock {expletive} down and change because you’re here? Get out of here. You can’t do that," said Lee.

Lee, who now lives on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, said it wasn't until whites moved in that new city schools, policing and garbage improved.

In his seven minute rant, he mocked the changing names of neighborhoods, too: Bushwick to East Williamsburg.

“What about the people renting? They can’t afford it anymore. People want to live in Fort Greene. People want to live in Clinton Hill… because of the {expletive} hipsters," said Lee who grew up in Fort Greene and has offices there.

Lee however did not comment on the recent arrest of NY Knicks guard Raymond Felton. Arugably the most popular Knicks fan, Lee said he wouldn't answers questions about Felton.
