DETROIT (WJBK) -

The 9-year-old boy who lived his dream of being Detroit's honorary police chief for the day while fighting leukemia has died.

FOX 2 has learned Jayvon Felton died Monday at Children's Hospital in Detroit. The fourth-grader was diagnosed with Leukemia in April.

Back on Jan. 31, Jayvon was dropped off at police headquarters by helicopter where he took the oath of office and held a news conference. He also met with emergency manager Kevyn Orr and deputy mayor Ike McKinnon.

The Detroit Police Department paid tribute to Jayvon Monday with a posting on Facebook that read in part:

"It was obvious that day how special Jayvon was. It was not just his courage that was noticeable; it was his charming smile and his caring personality. The way he looked at everything with this wide eye wonderment. In the short time that we knew Jayvon, he touched everyone in the Department leaving a lasting impression that will not be forgotten. He will be missed by many, his family, his classmates, and his DPD family."

Funeral arrangements are pending.
