Honor Guard Silly Photo Causes Controversy

Posted: Updated:

At least one Wisconsin National Guard member has been suspended after a series of photos was posted online that joked about military funerals.

Specialist and funeral Honor Guard member Terry Harrison posted the photo on her Instagram that shows National Guardsmen and women posing in front of an empty casket making funny faces with the caption quote, "we put the fun in funeral."

In addition, Harrison also uploaded a selfie onto her Instagram with the caption, "It's so damn cold out...WHY have a funeral outside !? Somebody's getting a jacked up flag."

After seeing the photos and reading the captions, people all around the country have expressed outrage.

Steven Mellish wrote on the Facebook wall of the Wisconsin National Guard, "I am a multi tour combat veteran who proudly served his country. I also have two brothers who are currently serving active duty[;] a General Discharge under other than honorable conditions is the very minimal they deserve as this would preclude them from ever getting VA benefits and would eliminate them from receiving education benefits.

Similarly, Stacey Greene wrote, "They do not deserve to wear a uniform or to be paid at tax payer's expense as they are not living up to the standards required by our military or in excellence in all they do.

Officials with the Wisconsin National Guard say that they have launched an investigation.

In a news release, the Wisconsin National Guard Major General Donald Dunbar wrote:

The recently revealed inappropriate photos and commentary posted to a social media site by a Soldier under my command are unacceptable. I am taking this matter very seriously. Upon learning of this incident, I ordered an investigation and we will wait until that is concluded to evaluate appropriate action - See more at:

However, his words don't placate people who were upset by the pictures.

One comment under his news release said:

You see, today would have been my youngest son's 29th birthday. In one week, is the anniversary of the day he gave his last full measure of devotion, in defense of his country, and it's citizens. He also, was provided with an honor guard for his funeral. The events in the past few days cause me to wonder ... Was his precious body subjected to such callous treatment? Perhaps not publicly, but even in secret by someone with similar disregard for his brave sacrifice. The thought makes my blood run cold, and tears fill my eyes. I always thought that the remains of our Heroes were treated with utmost respect. I pray that the people assigned to my son's funeral were decent, and respectful. Though I suppose I will never know for certain.

Retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Bob Scales talked to FOX News Insider about the photo.

"You notice this was a group photo, it wasn't an individual," he said. "The bottom line is it's all about leadership. It's all about taking charge … when you're in charge … and you have a bunch of soldiers clowning around a flag-draped casket, you stop it, and you send people home instead of sitting there and joining in this charade."

Meanwhile, the specialist has been receiving deaths threats, the Wisconsin National Guard confirms on their Facebook.
