Northwestern at hearing: Football not profitable

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

A Northwestern University official has testified football isn't a profit-generating program for the school and actually losses money.

The chief financial officer for the athletics department, Steven Green, took the stand Thursday at a National Labor Relations Board hearing on the football team's bid to unionize.

His testimony sought to counter union evidence that Northwestern football made $76 million in profit over ten years ending in 2012.

Green says that number doesn't factor in expenses, including the up to half-million dollars spent on stadium repairs each year.

NLRB hearing officer Joyce Hofstra several times stopped the testimony, saying the talk on both sides about revenue didn't go to the central question. She says that's whether football players are employees under law. If they are, they can unionize.
