CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A judge sentenced former west suburban Aurora Firefighters Credit Union President Anne Schaal to a short jail stint and probation after she pleaded guilty to stealing thousands from the organization.

As part of a plea with prosecutors on Feb. 14, 67-year-old Schaal of Sugar Grove admitted to a single theft charge alleging she took approximately $40,000 from the credit union between January 2006 and November 2011, prosecutors told the Aurora Beacon News.

Schaal was sentenced to 30 days in Kane County Jail, with credit for one day already served, three years of probation and 150 days on electronic home monitoring, according to the prosecutors. She was also ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation and to have no contact with the credit union, which offers membership to firefighters and their families.

Schaal was arrested in September 2012 on theft and misuse of a credit card charges. She had denied the charges and was scheduled for trial in March.

The credit union, which spent thousands to investigate financial irregularities and contacted Aurora police in late 2011, sued Schaal on grounds she posted phantom payments to general and personal credit union accounts, taking cash and using the union's credit card for personal expenses, among other things.

Additionally, she failed to make a required tax filing on the credit union's behalf, which cost the credit union around $13,400, and made an error related to member credit cards that required the credit union to refund money to some members, according to the suit which has since been settled.

Court documents in the criminal and civil cases indicate Schaal had a gambling addiction. In her divorce settlement, Schaal acknowledged she spent approximately $580,000 in marital assets on gambling, and prosecutors disclosed 134 pages of "player's club" records for Schaal from Hollywood Casino, court records show.

Schaal served as president from 1996 until her firing in late 2011.
