DETROIT (WJBK) -

This winter is one of the most brutal Michigan has seen. Still, dogs and cats are roaming the streets looking for shelter, and some pet owners are unaware of the dangers of leaving your pet outside in the extreme cold.

Members of the state Humane Society's cruelty investigation department and emergency rescue teams will be sleeping outside in the doghouses in Detroit for eight hours beginning Tuesday night and ending Wednesday morning. They are raising awareness about the dangers of leaving pets outside in freezing temperatures.

Deborah MacDonald is one of the staffers spending the night outside. She tells FOX 2's Maurielle Lue she and three other people will sleep in the doghouses with just straw - no coat or blanket - to imitate the conditions so many animals are forced to sleep in every night.

The staffers will be closely monitored. Warming stations are on site.

The MHS cruelty investigation and rescue department says it responds to thousands of calls each year about animals that have been abused or neglected or are sick or injured.
