Superintendent of Philadelphia Public Schools Released 42-Page Blueprint

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Superintendent William R. Hite Jr. has released a 42-page blueprint that discusses ambitious goals for the Philadelphia Public School System.

The document discusses goals like 100% graduation rates of students who are college-ready. The document has received praise for its intentions, but some criticism for its less-thorough discussion of budget needs.

The paper also outlines the roles of teachers and principals and the important duties they must take to satisfy the needs of students. For example, one change the document wants to make for the school district is to have the principal able to choose the teachers in his or her school.

"We feel that the single most important thing we can do is to make sure that students had great teachers in front of them," Hite said. "Principals with that level of flexibility is extremely important."

Currently, the teacher selection process is by seniority. "It should be the individual that does the best work, and in most cases those are more senior teachers, but in some cases, it isn't," Hite said.

The ultimate goal of the blueprint is exciting news for the city, whose budget cuts has resulted in multiple school closings and a reduction in student productivity.

Where is the money going to come from?

Watch the segment above to hear the three sources that Hite expects to help his proposal.

"Planning and initiating programs and policies concerning the organizational, operational and educational function of the district as directed by the Board of School Directors with ultimate responsibility for the execution of these programs and policies," is written in the Pa. Superintendent's contract.

For the sake of Philadelphia children and the quality of their livelihood, Philadelphians can agree to the importance of a proposal of this magnitude and its potential to impact the future of education.
