Turn Your Lawn into Savings and Save Water Too

Posted: Updated:

John Mills, his wife Pam Eagan and the Simons, who live a couple of blocks away, are getting into "dryscapes" ... landscaping that doesn't suck up so much water. They are concerned about the drought. David Simon says "it's only going to get worse." To Pam Eagan saving water is very important right now.

The Metropolitan Water District covers six Southern California counties and says in all of it's districts there are rebates for reducing your water usage by turning your yard into something more "climate-friendly" that requires less water.

The MWD's Bob Muir tells me that the community companies it serves have different rebates so, check with your individual water company. The Las Virgenes Municipal Water District is offering $1 per square foot for up to 2500 square feet. That won't pay for a complete changeover according to the district officials I spoke with, but it is a pretty good incentive. And, you can save quite a bit on your bill says Scott Harris with the LVMWD.

For instance, John Mills and Pam Eagan cut their bill by 43%. Before the change they used 160,072 gallons a year. Now, they're down to 92,004 gallons annually.

Another good source for water conservation tips is www.bewaterwise.com. It is a Metropolitan Water District site that is filled with tips and links.
