Detroit man: I was profiled filing an insurance claim for my stolen car

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

A Detroit man feels he's been victimized twice. First, his car was stolen, then he feels his insurance company treated him like the suspected criminal.

Charles Bovan's 2004 Honda Accord was stolen January 18. Charles says he still was in possession of both keys after the car was gone.

Detroit police found his vehicle not too far from the house Bovan and his wife are renting later that same day. The vehicle's catalytic converter was gone, the passenger side was damaged and the transmission was no longer working.

Bovan called his insurance company, Costco Ameriprise.

Bovan says he met with insurance investigators in Oak Park and they questioned him relentlessly about his personal life and even asked to see a cell phone bill. Bovan says the investigators told him to cooperate or the claim could be denied. But, what Bovan says the investigators said next shocked him most.

"'If you get someone to verify verbally they saw the car, how do we know they're not going to just vouch for you because they look like you?'" Bovan claims the investigator said. "That caught me off guard. Did he just say that?"

The insurance company didn't believe the car was stolen because the ignition was intact and the car showed no signs of forced entry.

"It's profiling. I definitely know it's profiling. As soon as I walked in and talked to those insurance adjusters it was very obvious what they were doing. At that particular time the car was stolen in Detroit - done deal," Bovan says.

Bovan believes someone pushed or towed his car away and stripped it.

Costco Ameriprise tells FOX 2 it is aware of the case and is working to get it processed, but does not believe Bovan's accusations of being bullied and falsely accused by its investigators have any merit.

Water has been shut off to thousands of Detroit residents in recent months. Despite protests, more shutoffs are expected. So, what about water that's running non-stop inside abandoned homes? Soon there will be a new way to stop that, too.
