Garden Guy Dale K drops by with some tips on keeping your fresh flowers lasting longer.
Vase: Make sure that your vase is clean by using dish soap. (Some say to use bleach, but because of the difficulty getting the ratio correct, Dale suggests not using it.)
Water: Dale suggests using distilled water to keep your flowers fresh for a long time. Tap water contains fluoride which can damage fresh flowers. Make sure to change the water regularly.
Food: Commercial grade flower food (the packet that comes with your flowers) are prefect. Regular sugar accelerates sludge or brown water.
Prepping the flowers: Leaves on your flowers are a good thing and when preparing your bouquet, keep remaining leaves above the water line.
Keep away from fruits: Fruits such as bananas, cantaloupe, oranges and apples produce ethylene gas which is odorless and can accelerates blooms on flowers.
