A woman hit by a delivery truck while crossing the street Wednesday night near Lake Calhoun has died of her injuries.
Caitlan Barton was walking across W. Lake Street near Calhoun Village just after 6 p.m. Wednesday when she was hit by the truck and dragged nearly 20 feet. Minneapolis police said the truck was heading south on Market Plaza and hit Barton while turning right on Lake Street.
Paramedics from the fire station across the street were at Barton's side within minutes and were able to get her to HCMC. She was listed in critical condition, but succumbed to her injuries Thursday.
Minneapolis police said the intersection is a hectic one for drivers and pedestrians alike.
"It's a real long red light there," Minneapolis police spokesman John Elder told Fox 9 News. "If that driver was stopped at the light and she came up on the side, he may not have ever seen her approach."
Even though Barton was walking with the light and was in the crosswalk, Elder said neither is a guarantee of safety.
"As a pedestrian, you have the right of way, but that doesn't mean you should always take it," he said. "Do what you need to do to remain safe. Sometimes, that means giving up the right of way."
The driver who struck Barton did stop and has been cooperating with the investigation. At this time, it is unknown whether or not he or she may face charges.
