6 Minnesota snowmobilers survive night in Grand Tetons backcountry

HASTINGS, Minn. (KMSP) -

Six men from Hastings, Minn. survived a night in the Grand Tetons backcountry after getting stuck in deep snow on their rented snowmobiles.

Max Jacoby, Richie Jacoby, Travis Krinkle, Kyle Ryman, Aaron Peine and Brent Zeien set out from Togwotee Mountain Lodge on Tuesday but didn't return by the end of the day.

Lodge personnel searched the area overnight, with Teton County Search and Rescue joining the search effort at 5 a.m. Wednesday. A guide eventually found the men at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday about 11 miles southwest of the lodge.

The men are described as "experienced" snowmobilers, but the deep snow near Tripod Peak proved to be too much.

"After they realized they weren't getting out, they did the right thing," Teton County Undersheriff Bob Gilliam told the Jackson Hole News and Guide. "They hunkered down and built a fire and stayed warm and dry."
