What is informed consent?

Posted: Updated:

Informed consent is a process for getting permission before a healthcare provider can conduct a procedure on a patient.

Informed consent is required any time there is an incision in the body, entry into the body, anesthesia and if there's potential risk of harm.

Dialogue must be tailored to the patient as each patient has a different level of understanding before he or she has a procedure, and the following information must be provided:

-Procedure details

-Risks

-Alternatives

-Urgent vs. elective
