Local Towns Facing Critical Salt Shortage

Posted: Updated:

This rough winter means a lot of salt on the ground so much. Some local towns are now facing a critical shortage.

It is an all-out scramble for local municipalities tonight to get their hands on road salt.

With storm after storm, and truck load after truck load, road salt has become a wintertime commodity. But what happens when all that salt disappears?

Borough Officials in Collingdale scrambled all day to get a 70 ton load of salt delivered, the salt pile looked like in Ridley Park completely empty.

Delaware County's Director Of Emergency Management says almost every town and borough in county has a salt shortage. It may mean your street will have to wait a little longer.

"They are stretching their supply as much as they can. And they are going to cover the critical areas of their town first. And if a citizen's street is not salted they should understand why it's not because salt is in short supply," Ed Truitt said.

Officials say last week's nasty storm down south diverted a lot of the local supply to other states leaving delivery drivers racing to salt suppliers in time for the next storm. This load bound for the streets of Darby.

Last year, Collingdale used 75 tons of salt. This year, over 300 tons and still counting and it's already causing consequences on the borough's budget.

"We'll wind up probably having to cut back on some other things we were going to do because of these expenses during the winter." Borough Manager John Hewlings said.

Towns that may not have enough salt are eligible to apply to the state to borrow from Penn Dot's reserves but they are also running low. The load for Collingdale will most likely will be gone by Friday.
