2 hospitalized after alleged speeding SUV slams into car

PHOENIX -

Two people were hospitalized after a driver allegedly ran a red light and slammed into a car near 51st Avenue and Bell Road on Tuesday morning.

Phoenix police spokesperson James Holmes says they received a call from a motorcyclist around 2 a.m. saying the driver of an SUV was driving too fast and almost ran them off the road.

As police were about to put a broadcast out for the driver, an off-duty officer saw the SUV driving about 80 mph.

Holmes says the officer was behind the SUV and could only watch as the driver slammed into a car.

The 44-year-old driver of the SUV is in critical but stable condition. Police believe alcohol pay have been a factor.

The 32-year-old driver of the car is in extremely serious condition and Holmes says hospital workers are trying to save his life.

The intersection of 51st Avenue and Bell Road was closed for several hours.
