Sports-themed plays on Broadway

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Fran Kirmser and Tony Ponturo are the duo behind "Lombardi," about the Green Bay Packers coach, "Magic/Bird," about the basketball rivalry between Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, and the Yankee-themed show "Bronx Bombers," which opened Thursday.

Sports may have infiltrated the great white way for good. "Rocky" the musical opens in March.

Some women say selling sports-themed shows to men is easier than more traditional Broadway fare.

Kirmser and Ponturo have a financial agreement with the MLB that allows the, to use official Yankee pinstripes and market directly to baseball fans. The creative team has signed on for two more sports-themed productions.

Kirmser says that sports are our most popular form of entertainment so it is not surprising that it would end up on Broadway.
