UPPER DARBY, Pa. -

A FOX 29 exclusive: A 6-year-old Upper Darby boy is home safe after police say his parents foiled the kidnapping of the little boy.

It happened right up the block from Upper Darby police headquarters Wednesday night.

Police say a 29-year-old Philadelphia man abducted the boy from a local deli and was about to drive away with him when both parents came to the child's rescue.

"I saw him sitting in the front seat crying his eyes out and the guy was sitting in the driver's seat," Mikala Mitchell says.

She couldn't believe her eyes Wednesday night when she saw her young stepson sitting in the front seat of a stranger's car as it was about to drive away from the Korner Deli right up the block from police headquarters.

"He was ready to leave with him," she told FOX 29 in an exclusive interview.

"This guy obviously targeted this kid to take away," said Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood.

Her son had gone to the store, right next to their home, to get a snack. Inside the store police say 29-year-old Christopher Tucker, of Philadelphia, began offering to buy the little boy some treats.

"The guy buys him some cookies and candy. He says to the store owner, 'I'm his uncle,'" Chitwood explained.

Minutes later, police say the 6-foot, 200-pound Tucker lured the boy into his white Pontiac with the promise of more cookies and candy.

That's when Mikala and the boy's father jumped into action.

"I'm pounding on the door saying, 'Let him out, let him out!'" she said.

"My boyfriend opened the door and got him to get out of the car, and then they started fighting," she added.

"The family has to be the luckiest people in the world because this child was gone," Chitwood said.

Mikala pulled the boy from the car as Tucker was pummeled and apprehended by the boy's father.

Police arrived, and Tucker was charged with kidnapping, luring a child into a vehicle and other counts.

"He's OK now. We're gonna talk to him and explain to him you don't get in someone's car, you don't follow anybody, talk to anybody," Mikala said.

"They're very, very lucky. This little boy is very lucky," Chitwood said.

Police say Tucker has several prior arrests, but none for child-related crimes. The first-grader was home doing fine according to his parents. Police plan to execute a search warrant on Tucker's car.

They are also reviewing surveillance video from inside and outside the store where the incident occurred.
