Vikings announce 2014 coaching staff, Priefer stays despite Kluwe claims

Posted: Updated:

The Minnesota Vikings have announced their coaching staff for the 2014 season. Joining head coach Mike Zimmer will be offensive coordinator Norv Turner and defensive coordinator George Edwards.

"I am very excited about the coaching staff that we have put together," Zimmer said. "Rick Spielman and I spent a lot of time talking to numerous candidates to ensure that we found the right coaches for this organization."

Special teams coordinator Mike Priefer will remain in the same role with the team despite an ongoing investigation into former Vikings punter Chris Kluwe's claims that he made homophobic remarks.

Priefer's status was a lingering question mark as the team carried out an independent investigation into allegations that Priefer repeatedly made homophobic comments during team meetings and disparaged Kluwe over his advocacy for same-sex marriage.

"If there's one thing I hope to achieve from sharing this story, it's to make sure that Mike Priefer never holds a coaching position again in the NFL, and ideally never coaches at any level," Kluwe wrote on in January.

Priefer has denied Kluwe's accusations, but the fact that he remains on staff is troubling to the ousted Kluwe. In fact, his lawyer says Kluwe is now considering legal action against the team.

On Thursday, Clayton Halunen described the team's investigation -- which is being conducted by a former Minnesota Supreme Court justice -- a "charade." He also said it appears the Vikings don't care if Priefer is a homophobe.

According to Halunen, his client has a number of legal options he could pursue. One route he could take is to accuse the Vikings of retaliation under the state's human rights act. Kluwe may also call upon religious protection laws over claims that Priefer allegedly told him he would go to hell for supporting gay people if he were to contend that he was retaliated against on the job since the two do not have the same religious beliefs. A third option available would be to contend that Priefer interfered with Kluwe's contract with the team.

Kluwe could also consider separate claims that allege Kluwe's contract was terminated after reporting Priefer's behavior to Les Pico, director of player development. He may also accuse Priefer of making false, defamatory claims.
