Snyder unveils $52B budget, includes tax cuts for homeowners

(WJBK) -

Gov. Rick Snyder presented his new $52 billion budget in Lansing on Wednesday that includes spending increases that cover education to 100 more state troopers.

Some of the highlights include:

- $100/per pupil increase in schools
- $80 million more for colleges
- $254 million for roads
- $120 million into state's "rainy day fund"

But the governor also proposes to give homeowners earning under $60,000 a year a break on their property taxes. Some Republicans want to roll back the state income tax rate rather than granting homestead property tax cuts.

"There is a disagreement. I'm a little bit disappointed in the fact that we do have such a large surplus and we're not going to give more back to the taxpayers," says Senator Jack Bradenburg (R) from Macomb County.

Lieutenant governor Brian Calley says 1.3 million taxpayers will get a break and many of those are seniors who could save $240 a year.

"And when you compare that to something like a rate reduction, for example, this is much more substantial impact to these folks," Calley says.

The governor may have to rely on Democrats to pass this plan if the tax relief runs into more Republican opposition.

With lawmakers running for re-election this year and wanting a tax cut to run on, some lawmakers are hoping for a bigger cut.

The debate over tax cuts and state spending continues.
