A year after giving a verbal commitment to Jerry Kill and the Minnesota Gophers, Washburn's Jeff Jones held true to his word as the fifth ranked running back in the nation made it official signing with Minnesota on Wednesday morning.
"I believe real strongly in loyalty," Jones said. "As a Minnesota kid that's from here, growing up here I wouldn't feel right going to Michigan, putting up stats with a Michigan across my chest as opposed to Minnesota."
There had been rumblings that Jones might go in another direction, but in the end all of the rumors were just that.
"I had to make it seem that way for you guys," Jones said when asked if he wavered at all during the process. "I knew Minnesota was the right choice for me."
Jones, the number one high school recruit in the state made the announcement flanked by his grandparents in a packed Washburn gymnasium. According to multiple reports, he had narrowed his list to two schools: Minnesota and Iowa State.
"I guess I can describe it as a roller coaster," Jones said about the process. "It has been confusing, but I'm here today and I got to pick my school so I feel great now."
Jones said he hopes to work hard during the summer to earn a spot to step onto the field and contribute right away and also hopes he starts a movement for other top players in the state to stay home.
