Naked Council Poster Has Long Beach Buzzing

Posted: Updated:

A banner in Long Beach has everybody staring.  It portrays the city council members completely naked.

But this display wasn't something the council had a hand in.  It's a  campaign poster with doctored photos of the council which was erected by a mayoral candidate.

Businessman Steve Mozena  is one of the council members on the poster.  He defends the poster, saying it's neither demeaning nor obscene.   The banner reads "Let's get buck naked," implying the message for fiscal transparency.  Mozena says council members should be open about how taxpayer money is spent.

While local residents largely think the banner is funny, at least one council member is not amused.  Long Beach council member Suja Lowenthal said that she thinks the banner is in poor taste and inappropriate.

While Long Beach officials aren't complaining about the content of the poster, they are objecting to the size.   The banner is 60 square feet, which well exceeds the code limitations of 16 square feet.

Mozena has said he wants to keep it the same size, and is applying for  variance.

With one week left before Congress' August recess, President Barack Obama is prodding Republicans to help ease the influx of minors and migrant families from Central America, but with chances dimming that border legislation will reach his desk before the break, he also is focusing on other ways to stem the flow.
