Frankfort break-ins may be tied to burglary ring

Posted: Updated:
FRANKFORT, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Six home burglaries within a few hours of each other on Jan. 20 in southwest suburban Frankfort appear to be part of a burglary ring that has struck in other parts of that area, the SouthtownStar is reporting.

In each of the six burglaries, entry was made by forcing open a rear or garage door, and jewelry was taken from the master bedroom, without the burglars going through the rest of the house, Deputy Police Chief Kevin Keegan said.

He said it appears that the thieves were in and out of each house within five minutes.

All six break-ins were near each other. Three took place in the Lakeview Estates subdivision in the 22500 block of Parkview Lane, the 8300 block of Brookhaven Drive and the 22600 block of Stanford Drive. The other three were in the Southwick subdivision in the 7200 and 7300 blocks of Southwick Drive and the 7200 block of Southwick Court.

"There's probably six other communities that have experienced the same type of burglaries," Keegan said, in addition to Frankfort, Tinley Park and Orland Park.

He said the Jan. 20 burglaries also are similar to two home invasions in Frankfort's Heritage Knolls subdivision in November.

Police departments in all of the affected towns are collaborating in the investigation, and they have "collected various evidence," some of which has been sent to the state police crime lab, Keegan said.

In five of the Jan. 20 incidents, nobody was home, and the homeowner was sleeping in the sixth and was unaware of the intruders, he said, adding that it's not known if the burglars rang the doorbell first to determine if anyone was home.

Keegan asked residents to pay attention to unfamiliar cars or people in their neighborhoods. He said residents should be alert if a stranger rings their doorbell, especially if the person says they're lost.
