Maple Grove officer talks about heroic rescue

Posted: Updated:

Maple Grove police officer Jesse Mathwig threw just about everything he had at the window of Douglas Aure's burning Suburban. After the door wouldn't open, Mathwig tried unsuccessfully to break the window with nun chucks. Then he tried breaking the window with a fire extinguisher, that didn't work. Finally he tried his flashlight.

"I ended up going back to my squad car, getting my flashlight," said Mathwig. "I stuck the window three times and on the fourth, the window ended up shattering."

Mathwig says it took just 30 seconds after pulling Aure out of the vehicle before the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames.

"Just helping out the public," said Mathwig. "You see it from one extreme to another. Situations like this don't always have a positive outcome so when it is a positive outcome like this it is very rewarding."

Aure was upgraded to satisfactory condition on Friday.
