Neighbors Pick Up Pieces After South Philly Blast, Fire

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

There was a very active scene for PGW crews in South Philadelphia, site of a fiery blast Thursday night.

More than a dozen people are out of their homes after a fire broke out.

On Friday, the cause was still under investigation, but neighbors suspect it was a gas explosion.

FOX 29's Leigh Scheps reported live Friday night from Bancroft Street in South Philly that firefighters say two people in the neighborhood went to the hospital along with two PGW workers Thursday.

Neighbors are left picking up the pieces, wondering when they can return home.

Firefighters responded to the 1800 block of Bancroft around 7 p.m. on Thursday.

One man – who wasn't home at the time but his wife and daughter were – says his family reported a gassy odor on the block earlier in the day.

Philadelphia Gas Works said it employees were on the block investigating a possible gas leak when the fire broke out.

Two PGW workers, someone on the street and inside the home where the fire, started were all injured.

Three homes were evacuated. The Red Cross is helping those displaced with temporary shelters.

Crews spent much of Friday investigating what caused the fire and explosion.

Firefighters say it could take days before investigators determine a cause.
