FEBRUARY CLIMATOLOGY: A look at average

It's the second month of the year and the last month of meteorological winter. We know that here in the Upper Midwest, that does not mean much, but at least February gives several reasons to believe that the worst may be behind us.

The average temperatures are going in the right direction if you like warmth. This is the first time we see our average high above freezing in quite a while. Check out average highs and lows expected over the next 4 months.

Not only are the temps rising but the sun is rising earlier and staying up later. We will have more than an extra hour of daylight by the time the month ends.

One unique scenario playing out this February is the fact that the only full moon of the month will occur on Valentine's Day. This should add a little ambiance to that special day.

February is also the month that little varmint comes out of his hole an tries to play meteorologist. According to legend, if the groundhog comes out of his hole and sees his shadow, he is so afraid that he goes back in to hide out for 6 more weeks of winter. If he does not see his shadow, its an early spring. Either one of those situations playing out would be great news for us.

We also have to get flaky for a bit. February is not our snowiest month, but we will still see the white stuff, 7.8" if we are exactly on average.

We would love to see your weather photos! Email them to Photos@Fox9.com . Also I hope you will LIKE my Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/#!/SteveFrazierFox9Kmsp and follow me on Twitter at @FrazierFox9. Thanks for watching! FRAZIER
