Abandoned cars may return home with damage

Posted: Updated:

Many of the more than 2,000 vehicles that drivers abandoned during this week's storm are headed back to their owners. Some of those drivers may have another expense they didn't expect.

With all the slipping and sliding going on as people left their cars amidst the snow and traffic jam, some owners will find bumps and dents on their vehicles.  State Farm agent Clyde Hill says if they don't have the right kind of insurance coverage, they might have to pay out of pocket.

"If someone hit your vehicle and of course it wasn't like that when it was there, they did not leave a note, getting information on the scene of that accident, any potential witnesses and also making contact with your insurance provider is the number one thing to do," Hill said. "Generally speaking, if they don't have collision coverage on their policy then they may not have coverage."

Hill says if this kind of thing ever happens again, drivers should take photos of their cars before they leave them and then again when they return as well as photos of the scene.

It would be nice to have a police report, but in this case police weren't responding to anything that didn't involve injuries.
