Rocori High School is celebrating hometown hero Eric Decker, a 2005 graduate who also happens to be a wide receiver for the Denver Broncos. And he happens to be headed to the Super Bowl.
"I've gotten a lot of text messages, congrats and good lucks and just I really think the support that I've had throughout my life, [fellow Bronco and Minnesota teammate Adam Weber], a bunch of other football teammates, baseball teammates, coaches, high school -- you can run it back, my phone was being blown up. It's always awesome to know there's so many people behind me and really enjoying this experience with me," Decker said during Thursday's Super Bowl media session.
ERIC DECKER DAY AT ROCORI
It's "Eric Decker Day" on Thursday at Rocori -- an all-school rally will celebrate Decker's upcoming Super Bowl appearance with a pep rally and a highlight reel of Decker memories in the gymnasium. Attendees are encouraged to wear Bronco orange and shrouds of students donning No. 87 will be passing through the hallways all day long.
"With the platform as a professional athlete that I'm on, my mindset is try to give back and just tell the younger kids that I'm a small town kid with people who thought [there's] no hope of making it to where I am, and I had big dreams, and I wasn't going to let anyone get in the way of that," Decker said.
'AN UNBELIEVABLE RIDE'
Decker earned All-Conference, All-Area and All-Section honors in football, basketball and baseball at Rocori. He tallied 2,156 receiving yards and 28 touchdowns during his prep career before heading to the University of Minnesota where he was sixth in the nation in receiving yards during his senior season in 2009. In the 2010 NFL Draft, the Broncos selected Decker in the third round, 87th overall.
This season, he had 73 yards during the AFC Championship game win over the Patriots on Jan. 19. Next up, the Broncos will face the Seattle Seahawks in their quest to take Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium.
"It's been an unbelievable ride for me to go through what I've gone through, the process of my life, to get to this day," Decker said. "I think it finally hit when we landed in New York that I'm playing in the Super Bowl and my dream is coming true, so this is a special time in my life," Decker said.
