TARGET BREACH: Justice Dept vows to track down thieves
WASHINGTON (KMSP) -
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder says the Justice Department is trying to track down the thieves who hacked Target, compromising the payment card information or personal information of 110 million people.
Hackers stole about 40 million debit and credit card numbers and the personal information of another 70 million people.in the pre-Christmas data breach.
"While we generally do not discuss specific matters under investigation, I can confirm the Department is investigating the breach involving the U.S. retailer, Target," Holder said. "We are committed to working to find not only the perpetrators of these sorts of data breaches, but also any individuals and groups who exploit that data via credit card fraud."
A California-based company has tracked the malware to a 17 year old from Russia, but they are unsure whether or not he used it himself or sold it to other cyber criminals.
