Dead And Rotting Snakes Found In Hoarder Bust

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of dead and live snakes. That what animal control officers found in the Santa Ana home of 53 year old William Fredrick Buchman.

Neighbors have been calling police to report a horrible stench coming out of the house. Buchman wouldn't let anyone in, so investigators served him with a search warrant. "It's a house of horrors" said the Supervisor of Santa Ana animal services, "ceiling to floor, wall to wall crates filled with snakes. Feeder mice are running free all over the house, some are trapped in plastic carriers and have cannibalized one another".

"He is a nice man" says a next door neighbor about Buchman. The stench began about a year ago, when his mother, who lived with him, died. He'd also lost his dog, which he loved. The snakes were a business, they add. " but once it began to smell so bad we couldn't open our windows" says next door neighbor Forest Long Sr. " we knew something was very wrong".

Buchman has been booked on suspicion of animal cruelty. It's the treatment of the animals that is at issue. Turns out you can have as many snakes as you want. It's not like dogs or cats, which are limited per household.

The Southern California herpetological association is taking all the live snakes to veterinarians, and keeping them at facilities. Those that make it will probably be up for adoption once the case is resolved. "We've never had a case this big" says one of their volunteers. They are accepting donations for the public to help care for the snakes.
