Chicago works to avert salt shortage in wake of more snow

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

If the cold and snow are not enough to bring you down, a number of communities around the area could soon be facing a new weather related problem: A shortage of salt.

The city of Chicago is rushing in salt shipments from Iowa, while many suburban communities are mixing sand in with their supplies to make them last.

"One, our roads in the city of Chicago are going to remain paved and plowed and passable," Mayor Emanuel said Wednesday. "Two, we're going to have the salt we need, when we need it. Three, we're going to do it in a balanced budget. That's a commitment we made and we're going to continue to do it."

All of this comes as a new round of snow heads our way.
