New exit ramps on Highway 316 by 2016

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -

It's a big construction project that's nearing the half way mark. Work on Highway 316 near Buford Highway causes traffic backups every day.

Thousands of drivers are counting down until the project is finished. Our recent above average rainfall and extreme cold weather isn't helping move the Highway 316 construction along, but the Georgia DOT says they're right on schedule to finish the work by 2016.

The project is meant to relieve congestion and the bottleneck that jams up heading west on 316, towards I-85. The DOT says more than 100,000 drivers use that stretch of 316 or Buford Highway each day.

In all, the work will cost more than $52 million dollars. Traffic is expected to flow much easier when things are complete.

The Collins Hill Road and Buford Highway intersections will be transformed into exit ramps, with overpasses. Progress is really starting to show and keep an eye out for even more positive changes coming this summer.

"We're looking at some dates coming up where we're going to be opening some things. We're hoping to open this Collins Hill bridge sometime this summer," says DOT Spokesperson Mark McKinnon. "The State Route 20 bridge is a little different, we had to cut the grade down. We actually had to cut that huge hill off underneath that bridge so we're still working on that. It's moving along too. Folks are going to be really pleased when this is done in 2016."

Keep in mind, the construction is right next to Georgia Gwinnett College, where nearly 10,000 students commute. DOT says they have been working with the college to schedule lane closures around big events like graduation.

They say, 2016 is the goal for having all the work done and both new exit ramps open.
