Super Bowl 48 Will Be More Expensive Than You Thought

Posted: Updated:

For those in New York City and the surrounding area, hosting the Super Bowl will be a very expensive event.

It's estimated that the event will cost about $70 million more than any other Super Bowl in history.

"In the case of this marketplace, just general economic realities suggest it's going to cost much more than it might cost in another city or region," says Al Kelly, CEO of the New York New Jersey Super Bowl Host Committee. "In this case, it was a 'start from scratch.'"

Top executives in the committee earned 2.3 million dollars in salaries last year while consultants got another half million. The big price tag reflects the cost of creating and employing the committee as it has expanded from one employee to more than 30.

The city expects more than 500,000 Super Bowl related tourists in the days leading up to the game. They've also chosen to invest a lot of that money into the community.

The New York New Jersey Super Bowl Host Committee has spent the last year raising money through sponsors and donations to pay for various things like turning a 10 block stretch of midtown, Manhattan into a "Super Bowl Boulevard."

So who's going to be making money during the Super Bowl? FOX 29's Financial Expert Dan Roccato gave some very interesting facts.

The NFL estimates that about $500 million bucks will be pumped into the economy due to the Super Bowl.

Some other facts include:

  • 1.25 billion chicken wings will be made.
  • $4 Million for 30 second TV advertisement.
  • The most expensive ticket is $18,000; cheapest is $1,785.
