A Newport, Minn. woman was charged Thursday with third-degree murder in connection with her husband's overdose deathlast March.
According to the charges, 44-year-old Jennifer Marie Johnson admitted to filling up a syringe with 30 to 40 milligrams of methadone and giving it to her husband after he had consumed some beers.
The Ramsey County medical examiner ruled the cause of death as "mixed drug toxicity."
"This is yet another example of the results caused by the recklessness of those in the drug culture," said Washington County Attorney Pete Orput. "In the last few years drug overdose deaths have become a scourge upon our local communities. We in law enforcement are doubling our efforts in these types of cases as a result."
Those who are addicted to heroin and prescription painkillers often need methadone to help cut their cravings during treatment.
