Donations make cancer survivor's dream of a puppy come true

COVINGTON, Ga. -

A young woman battling cancer is getting her wish thanks to generous FOX 5 viewers.

Destiney Warfield was diagnosed with cancer last May. Doctors discovered a football-sized tumor in the 14-year-old's abdomen. She's endured long hospital stays and aggressive treatment.

During her lengthy stays at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite, Destiney developed a special bond with a service dog named Casper. The golden retriever made the rounds and visited Destiney and other patients.

Destiney dreamed of having her own service dog like Casper, to help comfort her when she's down and to put smiles on the faces of other sick children.

"Because I knew how it felt so I would like to surprise someone at the hospital and make them jump up like I would in the bed. That would make me happy to see that sick person happy," Warfield said.

After her story aired,
FOX 5 viewers donated the money through a gofundme.com account that will allow Destiney to get her own golden retriever. She'll bring home her puppy – named Bella – on Valentine's Day.

"That dog is going to be there for me when I cry. I just can't wait," she said.

Funds are being accepted for the dog's care at: http://www.gofundme.com/624euc
