Chilling Video Captures Man In Avalanche

Posted: Updated:

A Colorado man is lucky to be alive after he was caught in an avalanche.

"Never been in a situation like that before. I mean, it happened really quick."

Lance Light was back country skiing on Berthoud Pass on Saturday, when he saw the avalanche. Light captured the whole scene on his helmet camera. He says he decided to go straight over a cliff instead of risking having the avalanche carry him over it.

Then he landed on a slab as it was barreling down the slope. Light describes what happens next.

"I saw the slab break, I saw it fracture down to the left." Light recalled: "But I was already too close to the cliff to do anything about it, so I just made the decision to straight line over the cliff instead of being carried over by the avalanche."

"And as soon as I landed, I just started fighting to look for that rip-cord," he continued. "But luckily, I didn't get buried and just stayed on top."

"It's something you're not entirely expecting to happen, but when you do, you only got one thing on your mind, really."

Light was not hurt in the avalanche. He says he plans to return to the back country, but he will be more conservative.

"Y'know, the best thing you can do is educate yourself."
