Rose Twp. man follows suspected drunken driver home, confrontation turns dangerous

(WJBK) -

A man in Rose Township with good intentions gets a tough lesson when he tries to catch a suspected drunk driver. The effort nearly got him killed.

Ted Hubert was going to work Monday when he saw a woman swerving all over the road.

"From Holly to Dixie Highway I [saw] her probably put over 20, 30 cars in jeopardy," Hubert tells Fox 2's Andrea Isom. He called his wife, Lori, gave her the license plate number and told her to call police at the Michigan State Police post in Flint.

"I called the police and gave them the license plate number, description of the car. They said, okay, they'd send a trooper out for them," says Lori.

After an entire 8-hour work day Ted passed the same vehicle while coming home from work. So, he followed the car home.

"I went up to the door, and I wanted to know what was up," Ted says. He and his wife then explain how the situation turned dangerous, and say the homeowners tried to hit him, let the dog loose on him and chased him down the road.

"Don't follow anybody home," advises Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw. Even though Ted's initial intentions were good the outcome could have been bad.

"I was dumb. I shouldn't have done that. But, you know, the temper gets the best of you sometimes," says Ted.
