A new study suggests eating a Mediterranearn-style diet may help fight a major health problem.

What makes the Mediterranean diet such a superstar? It's the fruits, veggies, fish, poultry, nuts and beans - all foods that are all proven to be heart healthy.

"You gain the most protection from a Mediterranean diet because it does provide the lowest in saturated fat, highest in fiber, highest in Omega-3, than any of the other comparable large-scale diets," says Julia Zumpani, a registered dietician at the Cleveland Clinic.

A new study out of Pamplona, Spain finds the diet may also protect against clogged arteries in the legs, known as Peripheral Arterial Disease, or PAD.

One in every 20 Americans over the age of 50 suffers from clogged arteries in the legs. Sometimes the symptoms of leg pain or cramps are overlooked but, in fact, PAD raises your risk of heart attack and stroke.

Researchers in Spain looked at thousands of people, at the average age of 67, and found those on the Mediterranean diet lowered their risk of PAD more so than those who followed a low fat diet. Dietitians are not surprised.

"If you're looking to prevent your risk of developing any type of heart disease the Mediterranean diet is the way to go, and really starting to incorporate it slowly into your diet," says Zumpano.

You can find an example of a Mediterranean style recipe here: Warm beet and orzo salad with spinach.
