DeKalb County Schools have been removed from probation after being placed on probation after a six-month investigation stemming from numerous complaints from parents, taxpayers, employees and even school board members.

DeKalb County Board of Education and SACS head Dr. Mark Elgart held a meeting at the DeKalb County district office on Tuesday morning to discuss the status of the county's accreditation.

SACS placed the district on "accredited warned," which automatically removed them from probation and took them out of any imminent danger of losing accreditation.

During the meeting, Elgart commended the district on a number of things including "stabilizing the school district and reversing the trend of depleting funds."

Elgart said the new designation demonstrates significant progress in how the board governs and manages money. Elgart commented that the school district was "in turmoil a year ago, but a lot has changed in a year."

Gov. Nathan Deal applauded Superintendent Michael Thurmond and the district's school board, including the six members he appointed last March, for moving the school district off of probationary status.

Thurmond, the former labor commissioner, took over as DeKalb Schools Superintendent 11 months ago. He credits the new board, school administrators, teachers and parents for helping to stabilize the district. And despite the controversy surrounding the move, Thurmond credited the governor for appointing effective leaders to replace the six he removed.
