Our Lady of Victory Catholic School fights to stay open

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Our Lady of Victory Catholic School in Portage Park finds out whether or not it will stay open on Tuesday.

Two weeks ago, the Archdiocese of Chicago told parishioners that the school, along with five other Catholic schools in the Chicago area would most likely close at the end of the year.

Our Lady of Victory, which has been open for more than a century, had to close a budget deficit of $400,000 in order to stay open.

Pastoral Associate Mary Beth Frystak, and Our Lady of Victory alumnus, parent and teacher Jenn Draper joined Good Day Chicago Tuesday to explain what the community has done to try and save their school.

The close-knit community really stepped it up to help out and raise money over the last few weeks, and they said the amount of support has been overwhelming.

They have received more than $660,000 in pledges for the next three years so they are confident that they will meet their goal, but they welcome the pledges that are still coming in – and are very thankful for them.

Frystak and Draper also told FOX 32 News that the finance committee and other school leaders are working to fix the budget so that if they are allowed to stay open, they are protected from falling into this situation again.
