Man struck, killed by Northstar train in Big Lake

BIG LAKE TOWNSHIP, Minn. (KMSP) -

The Sherburne County sheriff's office and Metro Transit police are investigating after a man was struck and killed by a Northstar train while walking on the tracks on Monday evening.

In a release, officials confirmed the crash took place at 4:45 p.m. just north of the intersection of 192nd Avenue Northwest and Zebulon Street in Big Lake Township, just west of Elk River.

According to officials, the gate arms controlling the intersection were lowered at the time of the collision, and the train came to a stop shortly after striking the victim.

The man's identity has not been released, and it is currently unknown why he was on the tracks.

Trains and replacement buses ferried Northstar commuters to their destinations as representatives from the Elk River Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, BNSF and Elk River Fire Department responded to the scene.

The investigation into the fatal crash remains ongoing.
