One of three Americans killed by the Taliban in an attack at a Kabul, Afghanistan restaurant has ties to our area.
Alexandros Petersen attended Georgetown Day School in Washington D.C. and recently worked at the Woodrow Wilson Center before moving to Afghanistan.
Petersen, known by some as Alexi, is being remembered as a brilliant scholar on international relations and energy geopolitics.
He recently moved to Kabul where he was going to teach political science at the American university when he was killed.
Petersen graduated from Georgetown Day School before moving to London where he went on to earn a PhD at the London School of Economics.
More recently, Petersen was the Southeast Europe Policy Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center and a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council.
A review of his book, “The World Island,” called it "A sweeping, succinct and convincing argument for Transatlantic unity.”
Petersen was killed when a suicide bomber and two gunmen attacked a restaurant popular with foreigners in Kabul.
It was an attack that drew a large group of protesters to the site of the assault.
In the last day or so, remembrances of Petersen have been posted online with one friend calling him a “deeply impressive individual.”
It is a memorial service is planned for this Saturday.
