Jaywalking crackdown in New York City

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Nine people have died while crossing the street in New York City this month.  Authorities have started a crackdown on jaywalkers in an effort to stem the problem.

The blitz of tickets, which Fox 5 News reported to cost $40 to $100 depending on the violation, started after the latest death on the Upper West Side.

Samantha Lee, 26, was killed near W. 96th and Broadway. Police say she was attempting to cross W. 96th St. in the middle of the block when she was clipped by an ambulance and then hit by another car.

It was the third fatality in that area in a little more than a week. Cops stepped up enforcement in the area, handing out summonses for jaywalking, and placing barriers and cones in an effort to keep walking from crossing midblock. An electronic warning sign was also put at the intersection of 96th and Broadway.

A tour bus dragged and killed Alexander Shear, 73, on Jan. 10 on W. 96th St. near Broadway and Cooper Stock, 9, was hit and killed by a cab about a block away a short time later that same day.
