Vandalized Memorial Leaves Oklahoma Neighborhood Outraged

Posted: Updated:

An Oklahoma neighborhood angry and shocked after a memorial to a fallen Special Forces soldier was vandalized.

Cheryl Martin was devastated when she received the news in 2009 that her son Army Special Forces Staff Sgt. Martin Jack Martin was killed while serving in the Philippines.

"It's unimaginable. There's no way that you could ever describe, everything seems surreal. They hit an I.E.D and they said that it was so large that when it was done, all they had to do was throw a little it on the Humvee," Martin said.

After her son's death, she erected a memorial in her yard with an American flag at the center. The flag served as a centerpiece until it was recently stolen.

Martin says the purpose of the memorial is very personal and symbolic, saying "One of the most important things that I want in my life is that people won't forget that somebody served their country and gave their life for their freedom."

At least one other American flag in the neighborhood was recently stolen. Residents in the have neighborhood gathered to replace the missing flag and began a community watch to keep an eye on the memorial.
