Ford has seven models that get more than 40 miles per gallon and six hybrids, or plug-in hybrids, at this year's auto show. Fox 2's Robin Schwartz checked out the C-MAX Energi, a plug-in that gets 100 miles per gallon with gas and electricity.

"The plug-in hybrid has a larger battery and it can plug in to the wall to actually recharge that battery," says Mike Tinskey, the Director of Global Electrification and Infrastructure for Ford. He says in 2013 the automaker sold nearly 90,000 electrified vehicles, which is a significantly larger number than previous years.

Another green option is the all-electric Ford Focus.

"That can drive up 100 miles completely on electricity. No gas engine, and that really appeals to somebody that knows where they go every day, that really knows that that's a fixed route and they want to drive green and low cost each and every day," says Tinskey.

Ford says it keeps making cars like because that's what customers want. Even the top-selling F-150 lost 700 pounds, reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

Other hidden green touches are found in the vehicles, such as the foam in the seats or the recycled materials used to make carpeting, fabric and insulation.

Tinskey says to expect the environment to remain an important focus for generations to come.
