FOXe: Help ecologists search for stoneflies in local rivers and streams

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) -

They may be covered with snow and ice but local rivers and streams have life even during the winter. In fact, ecologists say this is the perfect time of year to hunt for a particularly important insect in the water.

That aquatic insect is the stonefly, and its presence in the water indicates good water quality.

The Clinton River Watershed Council will search for the insects Saturday, January 18 at 10 a.m. and invite you to join the search with them.

Volunteers should meet at the Clinton River Watershed Council office on the southwest corner of Avon Livernois roads in Rochester Hills. You will be split into teams to travel to various sampling locations.

You must register to take part in the search. You can register by phone or email.

Phone: (248) 601-0606
Email: registration@crwc.org

Participants will receive lunch and hot beverages and are asked to dress for the elements.

There is also a stonefly search conducted by the Friends of the River Rouge.  More about the January 25th event:  http://therouge.org/index.php?id=687627
