If our feet could talk, a lot of them would be begging for mercy by the end of the day.
And by the time patients get to Dr. Rami Calis at the Emory Orthopedic and Spine Center, their foot pain has evolved into either Achilles Tendonitis – or painful band of tightening on the bottom of the foot known as Plantar Fasciitis.
A key warning sign for both is pain when you get up after resting.
Dr. Calis says "You want to take the time out and recognize that, hey, something is not right, it keeps coming back every morning when I get out of bed, every day when I get out of the car."
Dr. Calis says often the shoes we choose are the problem for women, they're either too high or too flat and minimal to offer any support.
If you have foot pain, he recommends stretching, trying shoe inserts, and rethinking what you're wearing on your feet. For work, he likes a more structured, athletic-style shoe.
Calis says to look for, "something that doesn't bend very easily, something with a lot of shock absorption. Not just the ball, but also in the heel area. That is the ideal shoe. The reality of it is, most people are not going to wear that kind of shoe to work because our work doesn't allow us to do that."

• a rubbery sole
• a little stiffness in the heel
• arch support
• a shoe with a wider toebox or rounded toe,
If you can easily bend a shoe with your hands, it probably doesn't have enough support. Over time, wearing ill-fitting shoes can lead to arthritis – and foot deformities.
But with common foot pain issues, Dr. Calis says changing shoes, and using inserts for support will relieve the pressure on your feet.
Dr. Calis says you may have to shop around – but there are shoes out there you won't pay for with pain.
